Ravindra Nath

Early Life
Ravindra Nath was born in Agra, India. He was the sixth of nine siblings. His close family members affectionately called him “Robin”. His early childhood was spent in Agra, Mathura and Aligarh. Even in his early childhood he stood out amongst all his friends and family distinguishing himself academically and for his intense passion to read, a characteristic he carried throughout his life. He received a BSc degree in 1951 and MSc degree in 1953 from Agra University and PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1957. The same year he got married to Lalita who remained a strong support in his personal and professional life.
Career
He and his wife moved to Saskatoon, Canada in 1957 where he did a postdoctoral fellowship in Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan. His fellowship was sponsored by the National Research Council of Canada. In 1959, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco, where he worked for three years. By this time he had distinguished himself as a protein chemist and began working on DNA synthesis enzymes, about the time as the famous Watson and Crick model of DNA structure was published.
